Peace, Propaganda & The Promised Land: U.S. Media & The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land: U.S. Media & the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Product Description

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported.Through the voices of scholars, media critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts, Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land carefully analyzes and explains how--through the use of language, framing and context--the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the occupied terrorities appears to be a defensive move rather than an offensive one. The documentary also explores the ways that U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have become complicit in carrying out Israels PR campaign. At its core, the documentary raises questions about the ethics and role of journalism, and the relationship between media and politics.Interviewees include Seth Ackerman, Mjr. Stav Adivi, Rabbi Arik Ascherman, Hanan Ashrawi, Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk, Neve Gordon, Toufic Haddad, Sam Husseini, Hussein Ibish, Robert Jensen, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Karen Pfeifer, Alisa Solomon, and Gila Svirsky.

This is a great DVD production that explains very well and in a balanced (sometimes too soft) way whats really happening in Palestine and Israel and why we never hear of these things in the USA/Western media. It all boils down to PR If the people in America knew what is actually going on in the middle east, citizens would remove their support for Israel immediately. So we have a media controlled by the industrial-military complex, big banking and Zionist/Jewish interests who cover the fact and deliberately lie to the people of the United States to avoid losing that support and continue with the genocide, expulsion, mistreatment, oppression, etc of the true semitic Palestine natives (there are currently NO LAWS or regulations requiring the Media/Communications to be "Fair and Balanced" in the USA).

This is the real reason why Arabs and Muslims hate the USA and "Western" World and the reason why most people do not understand where the hatred stems from.

Watch this film if you want to learn and understand.

Highly recommended to EVERYONE along with "Occupation 101 - Voices of the Silenced Majority (Documentary)".
The U.S. Media Serves Who?
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :7
Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land is a film every American needs to be made aware of and viewed. The film is that important. To the naive it will have a high WOW factor. To the more worldly it will confirm suspicions. While viewing the film it occurred to me that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has a uncanny parallel to what the United States did to native Americans in the 19th and 20th century. The film exposes how the U.S. and Israeli governments brilliantly and systematically manipulates the U.S. media to sanitize the images and information that reaches the American public. If you can control the information and images the public has access to, you can shape and control to a certain extent what they think. There lies the danger of a cabal gaining control of the nation news and information gathering and disseminating apparatus. Can you say Rupert Murdoch boys and girls? The news media should be the fifth column for the public not the propaganda mouthpiece for the powerful and the rich. British journalist Robert Fisk politely put the failure of the U.S. media this way "the relationship between American journalist particularly television journalists and the centers of power has become incestuous."

Just when the world is losing hope about the possibility of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict comes ENCOUNTER POINT. Created by a Palestinian, Israeli, North and South American team, ENCOUNTER POINT moves beyond sensational and dogmatic imagery to tell the story of an Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian bereaved brother who risk their safety and public standing to press for an end to the conflict. They are at the vanguard of a movement to push Palestinian and Israeli societies to a tipping point, forging a new consensus for nonviolence and peace. Perhaps years from now, their actions will be recognized as a catalyst for constructive change in the region. ENCOUNTER POINT is a film about hope, true courage and implicitly about the silence of journalists and politicians who pay little attention to vital grassroots peace efforts. Anyone who feels there is no way for parties in the Middle East to find a road to peace will be heartened by this film born out of tragedy. But this is a bigger and more important story than what is transpiring in the Middle East. This is a film about grief and and transformation, about choosing the path of peace instead of retribution. Kudos to the Producers for bringing this story to the public. There is hope out there, and the lessons of this film about personal transformation are important lessons for us all.

The success of Encounter Point at Tribeca and other venues is probably due to its attempt not to take sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Instead, it follows both Israeli and Palestinian members of an unfortunate "club"---parents who have lost sons and daughters in the hostilities between the warring groups. They have formed a group that is attempting reconciliation among its own members first and then reaching out to bring about understanding on a national scale.

I wanted to write this review objectively, but language insists on a point of view even when summarizing. Israelis would criticize my use of "conflict" as too mild a word to describe what they term "acts of terrorism." When a Palestinian is shot by an Israeli soldier, I am pro-Israeli if I see it as a casualty of war and pro-Palestinian if I call it murder as Palestinians in the film do). And while I do not describe the groups aims as "forgiveness," "settlement," "compromise," and "appeasement," I do adop the films use of the term "reconciliation," thereby suggesting equivalency between the two positions, a position I do not not wish to claim.

The fact is that as any documentary, Encounter Point also takes a position and is unmistakable in its sympathies. Despite that, viewers who disagree with the attitude will still find much to interest them in the film. If the point of view was responsible for its booking, the films actual interviews are what make it worth seeing. To their credit, if they chose deliberately, and to the credit of their artistic temperament if they chose instinctively, the filmmakers provide unforgettable moments of clarity. A Palestinian member of the group takes the filmmakers to meet his mother in Arab Jerusalem. She urges him to tell the story of his arrest as a young man. He tells of being in a room with two young men who were building bombs. When the bombs exploded prematurely, he too was arrested and imprisoned for a decade. Interrupts the mother, "He wasnt even in the room. He was outside, getting a haircut." The son gently but firmly corrects her, admitting he was in the room but insisting he was minding his own business. What a seminal moment, with mothers love and memory combining to offer a palatable version of events.

A similar moment of clarity emerges during an interview on Israeli television. The groups representative urges Israelis to question the efficacy of a policy toward Palestinians that has created 50 years of hate. The moderator responds by asking the representative to consider the possibility that the hate has no basis, that Palestinians want them dead without a specific provocation. And the representative raises his shoulder in the classic Jewish response that non-verbally says, "Who knows." Unfortunately, that shrug of doubt undercuts the optimism that animates the movement toward peace.

Ultimately, the strength of this film does not lie in its hopeful presentation of the groups aims but in its accurate rendition of the group members with all their human sadness, determination, and naivet. Their stories, Israeli and Palestinian, are heart rending.

I highly recommend this excellent documentary portraying the lives
of Palestinians and Israelis willing to say no to violence, and
hear each others pain in the quest for peace. Most of the media
attention in the U.S. is focused on terrorist violence this film
presents the viewer with the story of families on both sides
of the violence, who have lost family members to the violence,
and yet are reaching out to each other. These families represent the
seeds of hope and peace for Palestinians and Israelis. The film was done
with sensitivity and balance, and lots of painful but hopeful honesty.

Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
One of the messages of the film makers of "Encounter Point" I really like was that the politicians come and go, and people on the ground go through it all all the time. Another message I liked was that, unlike other documentaries that concentrate on the shocking and the dramatic, we should concentrate on those who are trying to make things better.

"Encounter Point" is a great documentary about an organization that unites bereaved families in Israel and the Occupied Territories. Both Israeli and Palestinian families. Yes, both Jewish and Muslim. Is that possible? One would never know it, watching the news and endless portrayals of hatred from that part of the world. "Encounter Point" shows us that it is not only possible, but is, and has been happening. Amazingly, both Palestinians and Israelis grieve after their fallen and they both want peace.

There will always be sceptics and there will always be Grinches who take away the little hope we have. My hat is off to the film makers and all the people portrayed in the film, as the process for peace has to start somehow and somewhere. And these brave people are showing us that one can put behind millenia of hate and competition and peacefully coexist with the rival. Highly recommended.

    The Ethnic Cleansing Of Palestine

    The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

    Product Description

In this controversial new book, a prominent Israeli historian at Haifa University revisits the formative period of the State of Israel. Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord during the War of Independence, he offers archival evidence to demonstrate that a central plank in Israels founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This book is a passionate plea to acknowledge the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 as the root cause of the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict.

    Haunting
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
An elegantly written, exhaustively researched account of the Nakba that will stand as the definitive work on the subject for any lay historian. Pappe writes with a reserved, almost detached historical precision yet cannot help allowing his grief and rage to break through.

While the book is stylistically elegant, its a difficult book to read emotionally, if you have any human feelings. Whatever your understanding of Palestinian history, it will be enriched by Pappes account. If you arent moved to compassion for this persecuted people you have a heart of stone, and if it doesnt change your thinking about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict then you have a head of stone. Should be required reading for anyone with even a mild interest in the history of this region.
A history must be judged differently than a work of fiction
Rating Point :1 Helpful Point :0
Most historians at least try, or claim to try, to be as objective as possible in reporting on the facts of historical events. Pappe is not one of them. In one interview he boldly says that he is not interested in the truth. He says:

" I am not as interested in what happened as in how people see whats happened. ("An Interview of Ilan Papp," Baudouin Loos, Le Soir Bruxelles,Nov. 29, 1999)

I admit that my ideology influences my historical writings...(Ibid)

Indeed the struggle is about ideology, not about facts. Who knows what facts are? We try to convince as many people as we can that our interpretation of the facts is the correct one, and we do it because of ideological reasons, not because we are truthseekers. (Ibid) "

See also the introduction to one of his books, A History of Modern Palestine, where he he unabashedly acknowledges his personal bias and open political partisanship , and more significantly how this impacts on his writing:
"My bias is apparent despite the desire of my peers that I stick to facts and the truth when reconstructing past realities. I view any such construction as vain and presumptuous. This book is written by one who admits compassion for the colonized not the colonizer who sympathizes with the occupied not the occupiers."

We all like to read books that confirm what we already believe or what we want to believe. But believing a historian who doesnt even claim to be interested in seeking truth is foolish. As is to be expected from an author who is "not as interested in what happened as in how people see whats happened" the book is full of illogical conclusions and omissions that mislead. For a review of how this book distorts the facts see the review by Seth Frantzman appearing in the Middle East Quarterly which is available on line. It is too long to repeat here. In short this book admirably carries out its authors stated goal of trying to "convince as many people as we can that our interpretation of the facts is the correct one, and we do it because of ideological reasons, not because we are truthseekers." If you are what Pappe derisively calls a truthseeker, you had best look elsewhere.

    ideological bigotry is not history
Rating Point :1 Helpful Point :0
First, lets document the crime exposed by Mr. Pappe. In 1947, when Britain wanted out of its League of Nations Mandate over Palestine, the United Nations partitioned the remaining portion of Palestine into two more states, a second Arab state (The first Arab state, Jordan, was carved out of Palestine earlier by the British.)and a Jewish state, i. e. the three-state solution. Most of the land that Jews had the temerity to occupy for more than 3,000 years went into the creation of the two Arab states. All of the West Bank inclusive of the old city of Jerusalem and all of the Gaza Strip plus additional territory were incorporated into the second Arab state, whose Arab population acquired the name "The Palestinians". The "two-state solution" widely referenced today was handed to the The "Palestinian People" unconditionally 60 years ago.

The Zionists accepted the solution of 1947, and the Arab world, which argued angrily against it at the United Nations, went to war to eliminate it. That war created the Palestinian refugees. Had there been acceptance of "the solution" by the Arabs in 1947, there would have been no Palestinian refugees and Mr. Pappe would need something else to discredit the Jews claim to a fraction of the land they occupied continuously for more than 3,000 years.

In the course of the 1947-1948 Arab war against the U. N. "solution", many resident Arabs fled their homes for essentially three reasons.

(1.)Their leaders told them the Jews were massacring them in an effort to incite them to join the war against their Jewish neighbors.

(2.)Their leaders told them to vacate so that invading Arab armies could more effectively kill the Jews.

(3.)Jewish combatants towards the end of the war forced them out in reprisal for the murdering of resident Jews by Arab combatants earlier in the war.

The first two causes displaced many more Arabs than the third, which is all that people like Pappe will acknowledge. In addition, Pappe and people like him will not acknowledge the comparable number (hundreds of thousands) of Jews who were thrown out of Arab countries in collective punishment for Israel prevailing in the Arab war of rejection of 1947-1948.

If you want more tunnel-visioned distortions of the history of the Arab-Israel conflict, Pappes egregiously dishonest book (and many more like it) will server you well.

Devastating... and essential reading if you want to know what really happened in 1948
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
When I started reading this book, I was planning to highlight only the most outstanding passages... the ones that really made the situation clear and/or that described particularly outrageous acts of ethnic cleansing. Well, I ended up highlighting half the book!

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is a devastatingly clear picture of what the Zionist leadership had in mind for -- and did to -- the Palestinians living in what was to become the Jewish state of Israel. I cannot imagine that anyone, after reading this book, would fail to agree that the Zionists engaged in nothing short of systematic ethnic cleansing. Pappe documents the atrocities village by village... and shows, by the way, that the attacks by neighboring Arab countries did not commence until the ethnic cleansing campaign was well underway.

As part of the ethnic cleansing, the Zionists/Israelis not only drove the Palestinians out of their villages by force and demolished their homes and belongings. In many cases, atrocities such as rapes and massacres were carried out. Pappe documents each case he leaves no doubt that these events occurred. In many cases, his documentation comes from Israeli historical archives.

Pappe documents how the ethnic cleansing campaign was organized and carried out as part of the Zionist leaderships Plan D (Dalet)... a blueprint for ridding the entire area of its native Palestinian population and replacing it with Jewish villages and (eventually) towns and cities. The goal was to take over all of historic Palestine, not just the areas offered to the Zionists in the U.N. Partition Plan. Many of the ethnic cleansing raids carried out as part of Plan D took place in the areas that were to be kept by the Palestinians for their own future state (which of course never materialized). By the way, the book contains some excellent maps that help readers understand where everything happened and the ultimate geographical results.

If you want to really understand -- on a visceral level -- how the Palestinians feel and (more importantly) why they feel that way, please read this book. It will blow your mind... and you will never again look at Israel and Palestine the same way.

The story of how Zionist colonisers planned and established nearly 700 agricultural settlements, towns and cities from the 1880s to the present. This extraordinary activity of planners, architects, social scientists, military personnel, politicians and settlers is inextricably linked to multiple contexts: Jewish and Zionist history, the Arab/Jewish conflict, and the diffusion of European ideas to non-European worlds. Ilan Troen demonstrates how professionals and settlers continually innovated plans for both rural and urban frontiers in response to the competing demands of social and political ideologies and the need to achieve productivity, economic independence, and security in a hostile environment. In the 1930s, security became the primary challenge, shaping and even distorting patterns of growth. Not until the 1993 Oslo Accords, with prospects of compromise and accommodation, did planners again imagine Israel as a normal state, developing like other modern societies. Troen concludes that if Palestinian Arabs become reconciled to a Jewish state, Israel will reassign priority to the social and economic development of the country and region.

I agree with Kristens review and her recommendations. Id also add to her list, "Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land." Arab Film Distribution provides a good website to discover more films related to the region.
Also, to get more in-depth analysis of Palestine, Iraq and the rest of the Middle East, theres a grass-roots media project called "Justice Vision" that offers DVDs of lectures by people like Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk and the late (and great) Edward Said. "Justice Vision" offers their DVDs, at cost, and each DVD contains 3 or 4 lectures. Youll learn more in those 7-8 hours than you will during a semester at most schools.

nice review, a little older documentary, but accurate
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :31
this documentary was done in the 90s but is an accurate portrayal of what palestinians go through. narrated by casey casum which seemed an odd choice to me, as im used to his doing the top 40 music hits sunday morning, the feature is nevertheless a good overview of the situation, though a little older version. i strongly recommend people to view more than just this film to get a good portrait of what the situation is overall in palestine/israel. there is a huge situation going on and it deserves to be investigated by everyone. i have come to recognize cencorship of materials locally, as i was searching for many items relating to this conflict in chain stores locally, and found NONE WERE AVAILABLE. i was told by several people that titles were out of print or not even available for special order. that to me reeks of censorship of the truth, and i was heavily disappointed. thanks to amazon, these are available to be purchased, and i recommend everyone do so, because you will not find them in stores, and the truth should be known. also check out, brothers and others, gaza strip, tragedy in the holy land, jenin jenin, jenin-massacring the truth, i think you will find these titles will help in addtition to this title here.
